B.U.D.S., (Being Understanding of Diverse Students) is the CHS peer helper group. It consists of about 25 members who are selected by a student survey and teacher recommendations. Besides being trained natural helpers, the group does community service. Every year we make Valentines for the residents of the Good Samaritan Home and serve breakfast at the Banquet in Sioux Falls.
The last four years we have adopted a deployed South Dakota National Guard Unit either in Iraq or Afghanistan. We have sent letters and care packages as well as attended their homecoming ceremonies. With the help of the CHS Industrial Tech Department, we built four shadow boxes in memory of the four fallen soldiers of Charlie Battery, which are on display in the Yankton Armory.
We work to response to needs in our community, country and world. We have done fundraisers to supply needed items for our elementary schools, to donate to the Red Cross and Humane Society after the Hurricane Katrina and Rita and after the tsunami.
BUDS also aid their own school. We have a Welcome to Our School breakfast or lunch for the new students at the beginning of the year. BUDS give tours of the school to new students. We try to add some fun by conducting the Turkey Teacher Award at Thanksgiving and the Christmas Door Decorating Contest. We provide the teachers with supper during the fall parent/teacher conferences.
